The Duel – U.K indie/punk/alternative
|
| After hearing this album it is going to leave you breathless. Going back to the old fashion punk style alternative blonde and Souxsie and the banchies sounds, are very evident here and having fun with it. Their not copying anyone and all the way though the songs, they just throw it all to the recording channels, they really have a lot going on when hearing it. Tara has that alternative front ladies voice, reminds you of a female John Lydon in places, which is not heard much at the moment. The only other bands that sound simular but with more short, sharp, shock songs is Hooker from Manchester, but this is refreshing to hear a band with an older sound. This is not “a song stands out” album, like singles purposly thrown onto the track listing for release, you have to hear the ALBUM as a whole. I would say this is an ALBUM BAND. There are a couple of songs half way though with slightly different edge when you have guest appearance like rob banks with kind of Max Headroom voice on Dead rock stars and also song nine sounds a little like the Police, you can hear roxanne in harmoney when the song breaks down to the quiet segments. They have written and released a 14 track album without breaking a sweat, it sounds fun, control madness with talent with a bit of ska synth in various places ( mainly in the background), easy going and it doesn’t sound rushed Got Andy on the bass, Pumpy on drums, Dave on gutar and Phil Honey on guitar, with a real feast for the ears. If you looking for a one line description of this band” A punk version of 12 piece orchestra”, there is A :LOT going on or appears to be The second CD and yes a second CD, full of accoustic recordings, got to love the attitude vocals of Tara. Some of the songs on the second CD are accoustic version of the songs on the first CD, but there also some different songs. The band are very diverse here, these guys have got alot of talent and no wonder they have been booked countless times, they certainly make an effort and make no mistake about it they have the passion for it and entertain This is dam fine album and the punk is kept alive in music like this even today They steam through 14 songs, just great alternative sound. If you are into Blonde, the banchees, sex pistols, Curve, peaches, great attitude, great music, makes you dance in the living room or club without a care, this is for you |

Have a busy day today too much to do … but before i can get on with this – i have to clear my heart of the crap that’s annoying it … Todays news has primarily been about 3 things so far :
1) Bank Leaders pay themselved huge bonuses, despite having had huge government bailouts –

Comments :
Banks are infuriating. they rip us off , charge us hugely, turn a country and and its governments on their knees – bring to a standstill the borrowing facilities to a generation of people who have been nurtured to borrow borrow on the never never – cause huge losses as we have been told and told over and over again over the past 6 months – and what for all this – bank leaders pat themselves on the back and give themselves disgusting bonuses.
This is day light robbery. The banks appear to be well over and beyond the law – they do what they like with no re-percussion of their actions and it appears our government justlays down and takes it -
Now i am no expert – just a day to day person and though my understanding may be simplified the whole think stinks of corrupt exploitation and greed.
With great power comes great responsibility – and these people are lookign afetr themselves.
Its our children that will pay the price they say .. why the f*** should they – when these people are allowed to run riot and fatten there own pockets for a job badly done.
How can we call this justice & how can the good law be upheld when it appears to be corrupt at the core of business leaders. Disgusting – and shame on you *ankers!!
2) Charity shops are booming in trade as credit crunch Britains storm the charity shops to hunt for bargains to ease there shopaholic addiction

Comment
Funny enough i went to the charity shops yesterday – i have often in the past enjoyed these places to get clothes that i can alter for myself – these days i find nothing that inspires. really fuddy duddy basics – and very over priced some of it – not sure why this is – but thats what my local ones have turned out like – mayeb thre are some better ones about
But trade is so booming that they are running out of clothes. The news reader spoke to a spokeman at oxfam who said that ‘every person in the uk has at least 6 items of clothes that they do not wear – and if they all gave this to the charity this would transalte into huge profits and billions were mentioned
This riled me – This is coming from a charity that i hear had millions invested in the failed icelandic bank – why the hell have these *ucking people got money to invest ????? what? have they saved all the poor people in the world and they have money spare to invest ????? YOUR Money that us good people give you should be invested in people not in *ucking banks !!!!! GRRRRR ..
The sick irony is that us poor caring individuals will do what we can to help out because we do care – despite having our own woes. Maybe this year the bankers should give thier so called bonuses to charities …
3) Last but more devasting – 30 Fires across Australia ruin towns to cinders – they say at least two of these fires were caused by arsonists.

Comments :
What can i say – hugely sad beyond words. Our hearts go out to all that are having to face these horrid nightmare atrocities put down largely to climate change. The question has to be asked – is this is the shape of things to come ? seeing hell on earth visualised in our corners of our lands . … The news majors on the fact they they think whoever started the fires are ‘mass murderers’ – well – at least two of them – but what about the rest ? … here the facts on Reuters http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSSP292660
All i can say people is this – Love is the Law – if we can operate all our actions and decisions for the future in Love then we may have a hope in getting through all this .. maybe its time for all to lay down thier weapons – get heads to gether to see how we can start again .. somehow i hope we are big enough, intelligent enough to do so … ? : /
‘Victory can be ours – let love bring down guns!’
‘Victory Can be ours – let love overcome!’

An end of an era for all of us – a turning back of our memories and on art & music culture. Very sad that this gorgeous theatre with its many legendary artists who have played there will be shut down. and for what ?
‘The Astoria will be demolished to make way for Crossrail, despite public opposition and an online petition. Former London Mayor Ken Livingstone confirmed that the venue “can’t be saved’
Also to go is the LA2, The metro, Sin – basically a big part of music culture on the fringe of west end and soho
Apparently in the bubble of extortionate over priced property values The Astoria was sold in June 2006 by Compco Holdings property group Derwent Valley Central for £23.75m, who were rumoured to be planning to convert the site into a combination of shops, flats and offices to take advantage of an increase in property prices for the 2012 Olympics .
Now that property prices have turned on thier heads and are going down and down every day as people struggle to keep their business’s, livelihoods going – lets hope that those who put greed and money before art, music & youth culture will pay the price where it will hurts them the most -thier own pockets.
They are ripping down a major part of local peoples, artists and tourists enjoyment. My brain cant make sense of why they need to do this for the 2012 olympics – They should be showing off the best things of London – not tearing it down? Now i hear the railway wont be ready til 2017 ???
I really hope in the most loving way – that all their plans will be scuppered every step of the way .. despite protests – the peoples pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
But lets hope all is not lost .. lets hope somehow there may be some justice and thier development plans will fail & fail somehow someway .. they made thier plans when money appeared to be no object – now money is an object to these people so i hope thier plans will fail – even still.
on 31st January there was going to be a final punk gig at the Astoria, but apparently this plan was met with opposition – so it had to be cancelled.
The Astoria held its last gig last night and closes its doors for the last time on 15th January.
To all the cool people, that worked their and those of us, who go out/went out around their regularly for the love of music, i feel nothing but sadness.
I can’t bring myself to say RIP Astoria because i hope that it doesnt. I hope that the greedy developers and fat cats will lose lose lose for messing with Rock n Roll heritage ..
Alan McGee, founder of Creation Records, said the Astoria, which opened as a cinema in 1927 and became a concert venue in 1976, had “a lot of soul and character”. He added: “In Paris or Mexico places like this don’t get knocked down, they get revamped. It’s criminal they’re knocking down these iconic buildings.”
There you go – nuff said – ‘It’s Criminal’
So i hope the criminals dont win.

Happy New Year everyone!
Woke up this morning with T4 on Channel 4 and they were interviewing Girls Aloud – you know that girl band outfit – they were asking them what music they dont like and guess what they said – heavy metal and punk . i mean what a bunch of ***** .
’so do you write any of the songs?’ they were asked – hahahaha that was funny listening to them try and make out they were involved -
they are just like models really – someone else makes the clothes, they have to wear them – and they have been made a musical career in the same vein. as much as you dont get punk/metal – i dont get girl bands/ boy bands – although when i was a kid i did love singing with a load of other girls – and i guess that’s what they are trying to do – appeal to the kids – get their imagination – but they are not helping the kids music imagination – where has the great empire of boy bands and girl bands taken the mass population in inspiration ?
i may have been a kid who would get up at school and sing a song with a bunch of girls while ‘miss’ played the piano – but bloody hell, thru love for it took it one step at a time further – didnt carry on singing with me school mates for the rest of me sodding music life – it makes no sense to me why these people exist – all the simon cowells and their clothes horses have achieved is inspiring a generation of kids not to give a shit about music really – another reason why they dont buy records anymore – utlimate interest has been taken away from music – you know the true hearttfelt stuff that you relate to and makes you rock while you’re rolling thru life – they’ve taken the imagination out of it all and produced us with a pile of prestine shit on a plate – and now with X Factor theuy’re bloody tryingto clone a load more of the same shite !!!
so – you dont like punk girls aloud? hmm you screw your nose up cos you really cant understand it ? your showing your ignorance and your showing blatant lack of ability to inspire because you have not allowed grass roots music to inspire you – sad – you’re very sad
so we stand at different sides of the track – and in this new year am happy where i’m standing and with whom.
To celebrate the new year – please read the new edition of Punk Globe – lovingly brought together by Ginger Coyote

This festival always offers an extensive line up of established & up and coming bands within the punk and oi genres. 1000’s of punks flee thier normal existence each year to go to this festival and enjoy time out with music and people that they love with a passion. Punk rock is most certainly not dead when you see it in action in this way.
The rebellion promoters always keep ticket prices reasonable, even more so, if you book in advance.
Tickets are now on sale for next year and if you book before 31st October 2008, you can get into this whole festival for £65.
And as special treat they have organised a very special christmas gig to be held at The Forum in Kentish Town on Saturday 13th December 2008. The Damned + Special guests :

THE DUEL
“Before their sell out UK tour with Sham 69 in November. The Duel are like that old punk band you never discovered. No covers. Every track is like an anthem,
you’ll wanna pretend you know the words to. But it’s better to be a dog eared original than a perfect carbon copy. See these perfect originals at one of the original punk pubs.” Mark Williams – Film Director http://www.myspace.com/theduel
THE SKUZZIES
“Malcontents of the modern age, The Skuzzies play hook proppelled city slang. Arch exponents of dirty indie punk, their songs give voice to the disenfranchised and exiled, ravaging society’s shiny facade in a blur of beats and gritty riiffs ” Nina Antonia – Author/Journalist ….Mojo/Uncut/Record Classic Rock http://www.myspace.com/skuzzies

As a way of total respect for the guys in Heavy Load , Sham 69 have asked them to perform at the upcoming That’s Life’ show at the Astoria on 18th October 2008 in which Sham 69 will be performing their successful chart album ‘That’s Life’ on stage.
The show will also feature special guests, including female fronted punk rock band The Duel and other special guests.

This completely one off show will be a true reflection of how punk has stayed true to its form with such a concert as this.
The Album that was also shown as part of the BBC’s award winning programme arena, has spawned an unlikely success in the form of Grant Fleming who featured on the original album playing the character of Joe Public, went on to become an award winning photographer for such bands as Primal Scream and now endangers himself with every click on the battle fronts of Iraq and Afghanistan.
So for a night of unbridled punk passion and power, come along to the Astoria Charing Cross Sat 18th October.
There will never be a show quite like this one again…

As ’90s groups had seemingly sifted through the last ashes of punk’s pyre, the new bands on the block began intensively mining a previously little explored musical vein: post-punk. The Duel, however, refused to go down that pit, preferring to reignite punk’s fire once more. It’s a simple enough proposition, but rather than bending old-school’s lights through a modern prism, as so many groups had done before them, this quintet instead re-create it, capturing both the original style and feel of the time. Proudly wearing their myriad influences on their sleeves, Duel, with saber-like accuracy, slice and dice up the sounds of the ’70s punk scene, churn them up, and then almost arrogantly gob them out. The Sex Pistols, the Clash, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Ramones and the Dead Boys are the band’s major touchstones, but that’s just for starters. Although purists insist punk ended in 1977, the Duel don’t end there, going on to gobble up the styles of second generation groups and early hardcore bands as well, Killing Joke, Wire, and Vice Squad, among them. But what the Duel do best is attack their songs with the same gusto as the originators, and with a bit more musical proficiency to boot. Like her bandmates, frontwoman Tara Rez’s vocals are pulled in as many directions as the music itself. She can sound as elegant as Pauline Murray one minute, as exhilarating as Fay Fife the next, shriek like a banshee, or more accurately Poly Styrene, or sound as aggressive as Siouxsie Sioux herself. The songs are as sharp as anything from back in the day, the lyrics withering, with many revolving around political and societal concerns. Punk never quite succeeded in its goal of trashing the modern world and building anew, isn’t it about time, then, that someone demanded Let’s Finish What We Started?Jo-Ann Greene, All Music Guide

Its hard to take that there are people in Zibabwe dying becaus they have no clean water to drink
its even worse to hear the extent of the hell. there is no media with the outside world and the people have no clue of what we are witnessing, and with power cuts on top the people are left with much to worry about.
Areas of poverty appear to be growing everywhere and darkness is coming over our lands.
is it time for us all to try and find a way – a new way of tackling all this …

‘
With deep personal sadness I must announce that my dear friend and client Bettie Page passed away at 6:41pm PST this evening in a Los Angeles hospital. She died peacefully but had never regained consciousness after suffering a heart attack nine days ago.
She captured the imagination of a generation of men and women with her free spirit and unabashed sensuality. She is the embodiment of beauty.’

Rebellion Festvals do it in style again. They are promoting the legendary Cocksparrer at the well aclaimed Melkweg in Amsterdam in November next year. Another excuse for punks united around the world to get thier arses to pastures green (hehe) to show em who we are what we like and that we are still together.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Cocksparrer the let me fill you in:
http://www.myspace.com/cocksparrerpunk
Cock Sparrer Will Always And Forever Be..Colin McFaull – Vocals, Steve Burgess – Bass Guitar, Steve Bruce – Drums, Mickey Beaufoy – lead guitarist Daryl Smith-Guitarist and Will Murray – Road Manager..
This is how there career is described on Wikipedia and i think all it does is inspire and demand an up to date interview of their thoughts, experience and drive in the punk movement
‘Cock Sparrer was founded by Colin McFaull, Mick Beaufoy, Steve “Burge” Burgess and Steve Bruce – who had known each other since the age of 11. Playing in nightclubs in and around London, they developed the style that was later to be known as streetpunk or Oi!. In 1976, the band met with Malcolm McLaren, who allegedly offered to sign the band alongside to his newest discovery, the Sex Pistols. According to the members of Cock Sparrer, the deal never happened because Mclaren refused to buy them a round of beers. Another explanation is that they refused to cut their hair as McLaren wanted.
In 1977, Garrie Lammin (Burge’s cousin) joined in as second guitarist and the band secured a deal with Decca Records, who were hoping to cash in on the now blooming punk movement. The first Cock Sparrer single was “Runnin’ Riot”, released in May 1977. It did not sell well, nor did the following singles, and Decca dropped the band in 1978. The band members had already recorded an album’s worth of material, which remained officially unreleased until 2006. Cock Sparrer disbanded in 1980, but in 1981, old Cock Sparrer songs were included on several Oi! compilation albums, and interest in the band began to rise again. They reformed in 1982 and signed to Carrere Records, which released the “England Belongs to Me” single followed by Cock Sparrer’s debut album Shock Troops. It was released in fall 1983 and included the songs “Where Are They Now“, “I Got Your Number”‘ and “Riot Squad.” In 1984, Beaufoy left the band and was replaced by Shug O’Neill, who was later replaced by Chris Skepis. The album Running Riot in ‘84 was released in October 1984.
The band performed several reunion concerts in 1992 (with Daryl Smith as the new second guitarist), and in 1994 they released a new album, Guilty as Charged. In 1997, they released the album Two Monkeys. Since then, Cock Sparrer has occasionally toured and has performed sporadically at punk festivals including the Wasted/Rebellion festival. In April 2008 they headlined Rebellion Vienna [2] and also headlined Rebellion Blackpool in August 2008.[3]‘

NEW ALBUM :

I saw this band properly in Vienna – a festival put on by Rebellion – it was a truly memorable anthemic night and specially every time ‘Because your Young’ and ‘England Belongs To Me’ is played i go mad singing along filled with power and excitement. To achieve this in songwriting is a very credible acheivement . To affect the multitude crowd from the ones down the front to the ones on the fringes at the back – all arms up singing with passion – what more could you ask for as a band and an admiring on looker
I missed the gig in Wolverhampton, but i was well pissed off i did, didnt hear anyone coming back to say they had a naff time haha.
So … book early to avoid being bitten by the credit crunch and get arses and boots to Amsterdam for a gig of difference – come on you know you are dying for something to pluck u up and lift you out of your daily grind …

i was going to finish by sayin come and let your hair down .. and was amused at the thought of how a skinhead would do this . :chuckle:
Also check out one of my favourate sites for indepth info of the band :
